Dr. Emmanuel Babatunde John Recognised Among World Physiotherapy’s 75 Noteworthy Physiotherapists

World Physiotherapy has recognised Dr. Emmanuel Babatunde John among its 75 Noteworthy Physiotherapists as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations. World Physiotherapy’s recipients page lists him under Nigeria and provides his biography. The recognition honours exceptional contributions to physiotherapy at national, regional, or international level.

Dr. John, PT, DPT, PhD, MPH, MBA, FAHA, FIMC, is Professor of Health Professions and Immediate Past Dean of the Dr. Donald E. and Lois J. Myers School of Nursing and Health Professions at York College of Pennsylvania. His four-year tenure as dean concluded on June 30, 2026.

Building opportunities for the profession

His World Physiotherapy biography describes more than 25 years of work supporting physiotherapy education, professional development, and digital infrastructure across Africa. He founded the Nigeria Physiotherapy Network in 1999 and designed, deployed, and sustained digital platforms serving the profession, including systems for the World Physiotherapy Africa Region.

At the 2014 Africa Region congress in Zambia, Dr. John proposed Vision 2020 and Vision 2030 for entry-level physiotherapy education. He also helped broker an online transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy programme between the University of Michigan-Flint and Nigerian physiotherapists, expanding opportunities for professional advancement without requiring participants to leave Nigeria. His wider contributions include support for physiotherapy education in Cameroon and Ethiopia, as well as mentorship, institutional support, and service to professional organisations.

A shared honour

Dr. John receives this recognition with gratitude to God through his Lord Jesus Christ. He shares the honour with his wife, Toyin, and their family, whose love, prayers, patience, and sacrifices have supported his work over the years.

He also thanks his spiritual parents, Rev. Kola and Rev. Funke Ewuosho; his professional mentors, including Professors Chukuka Sam Enwemeka and Joseph A. Balogun; the World Physiotherapy Africa Region for the nomination; World Physiotherapy for the recognition; and the colleagues, students, collaborators, and institutions who have shared in this journey.

This milestone is both a celebration and a renewed commitment to service: strengthening institutions, expanding educational opportunities, and supporting the next generation of physiotherapists.
